About Prof. Kelly Lake & CMP120

CMP 120 is the second level composition class at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ. www.rider.edu The college defines the class as a place where: “Students will increase their competence in the critical reading of challenging college-level texts that engage significant ideas and in writing effective essays that advance a clear and meaningful thesis while demonstrating understanding of those texts.” (Rider University Undergraduate Course Catalog 2006-2007)

This semester we are trying something a little different– our class is a pilot class where we are trying to adopt some different readings and follow up on techniques for defending your ideas (support).

I, Kelly Lake, am an adjunct instructor at Rider University. I have been an adjunct at Rider before, about seven years ago in the Theater Department. And I am thrilled to be a part of the English Department and Composition team at Rider. I have been an instructor in the Theater and English Departments of Rider University, New York Film Academy, Mercer County Community College and Mercer County Performing Arts High School. I love getting to know my students through their ideas that they share in class and in their papers.

I graduated from Skidmore College, American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and The Actors Studio MFA at New School University. I have my undergraduate degree in English Creative Writing and my graduate degree in Acting. I have worked as a teacher, coach, performer (film, stage, TV), director, dramaturge and producer in the years since I have left school. I love acting and directing, but I am focusing on writing right now… but who knows! Here is my acting website www.actresskellylake.com

For the past three years I have been addicted to karate and kick boxing– I won my division a year ago at the Battle of the Boardwalk in Atlantic City for forms in sport karate. This past fall, 2006, I fell in love with the high energy TurboJam and became certified as an instructor for them. www.turbojam.com But I’ve decided that I need to focus on building my core more, so I’ve switched out for the next few months to a schedule that focuses on swimming, pilates and yoga. (I’m thinking of getting certified for pilates!) www.pilatesmethodalliance.org I plan on retuning to the karate floor in May. So all this and I am beginning to work on my first novel.

I am married, to my fabulous husband Ed. He is a professional chef… Here is his restaurant www.chakrarestaurant.com We have two crazy Chesapeake Bay retrievers and an odd assortment of cats. I love all things artistic, ice hockey, laughing, dance, theater…

A couple of mottoes I try to keep in mind:

A person can fall many times, but they are not a failure until they give up.

If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I acquire the ability to do it; even if I did not have the ability in the beginning.” Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948)

Attentiveness is the path
to true life;
Indifference is the path
to death.
The attentive do not die;
The indifferent are as if
they are dead already.

“Art is the communication of Ecstasy.” Duspensky
